Recent studies suggest that eating chocolate, especially varieties that contain probiotics and prebiotics, can offer significant health benefits, particularly for gut health. A recent report published in ACS Food Science & Technology reveals that adding these beneficial elements to dark chocolate could enhance its health benefits.
Probiotics are live microorganisms found in fermented foods like yogurt and kimchi, helping to improve the gut microbiome and alleviate digestive issues. Prebiotics, such as dietary fiber, provide the food that probiotics need to survive in the intestines.
In this study, scientists developed a chocolate containing both probiotics and prebiotics, with five samples of chocolate. One sample contained only traditional ingredients, while the other four included added probiotics and prebiotics.
The results showed that this symbiotic chocolate contained higher levels of antioxidants compared to traditional chocolate, and the probiotics remained alive for up to 125 days in storage conditions.
The researchers expressed excitement about exploring more health benefits of this chocolate, and we might see doctors recommending more of it in the future!
