Middle classes appear to be a strong political marker for the new prime minister. Gabriel Attal, during the handover ceremony on the steps of Matignon with Elisabeth Borne, centered his speech on the struggling middle classes in France... The middle classes, those who rise early and live off their work... This political marker has accompanied Gabriel Attal since his early ministerial posts: The "middle classes" are all the French who rise early, pay their taxes, and rightly expect a return on their investment from the State, especially in terms of public services... They are not the only ones, but they feel that their taxes are lost in the quicksands of state wastefulness. Gabriel Attal had already focused on this at Bercy when he was Minister of Public Accounts, with his "Marshall Plan" for "better living from one's work," an initiative aimed at the middle classes... For a few months at rue de Grenelle, in the Ministry of National Education, he also made it his guiding principle. However, it's more about communication, as he never stays long enough in a position to evaluate his impact!
Statistically, a working couple belongs to the middle class when their income is between 2,200 and 4,000 euros per month. These middle classes are hit hard by the housing crisis, inflation, rising fuel prices, and an electricity bill set to increase by 20% on February 1, as they generally do not qualify for any state financial aid... They are just above the thresholds... They work hard, do not protest in the streets, sometimes live outside urban centers, and suffer in silence: Gabriel Attal says he wants to take care of this average peripheral France that dressed in "yellow" during the major demonstrations of 2019... The new prime minister will be judged on his actions, not his communication... A CSA poll, published the day after his appointment to Matignon, showed that 48% of the French trust G Attal compared to 53% for Elisabeth Borne at the time of her appointment... So there is doubt among the French: they are waiting to see Attal in action!
The political class has often acknowledged the sense of decline felt by these middle classes without ever providing lasting solutions. This has been a central issue for a long time: Michèle Alliot Marie wrote a book titled "The Great Fear of the Middle Classes," and more recently, Maurice Lévy, the former CEO of Publicis, published a brief pamphlet titled "Open Your Eyes" addressing the political class about the doubting middle classes, worried about the future of their children, and panicked by the fear of a great economic and cultural decline...
Gabriel Attal wants to take care of the middle classes and give them hope, more purchasing power (a 2 billion tax cut is still on the agenda), more security in their daily lives?? Chiche! Attal therefore makes it his priority! The Prime Minister identifies a new priority with each field visit: health, education, security... By aligning so many priorities, the Prime Minister runs the risk of having none!
